Overview

We didn't think much about bassinet sheets before our baby arrived. We bought a cute three-pack of organic cotton fitted sheets, patted ourselves on the back for being prepared, and moved on. Then came the 2 AM blowout of week two — the kind of diaper failure that defies physics — and we learned exactly why waterproof bassinet sheets exist. By morning, the organic cotton sheet was stained, the mattress pad underneath was questionable, and we were frantically researching waterproof options. We ordered the A Top Shelf Waterproof Bassinet Sheets that same day, and they've been on our bassinet ever since.

The package arrived as a two-pack, which immediately solved our laundry math problem. With only three non-waterproof sheets, we were doing bassinet laundry every other day. With two waterproof sheets in rotation plus our backups, we could go four or five days between washes. The sheets feel surprisingly normal — the top layer is 100% jersey cotton that's soft against baby's skin, and the waterproof TPU backing is completely undetectable to the touch. There's no crinkling, no plastic feeling, no indication that these are anything other than nice fitted sheets.

Over the next three weeks, these sheets saved us at least half a dozen times. Spit-up during the post-feeding window, a leaky diaper at 4 AM, a bottle spill during a groggy feeding — each time, the liquid beaded on the surface or absorbed into the top cotton layer without ever reaching the mattress underneath. At $21 for two, they paid for themselves the first night they prevented a mattress disaster.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Waterproof TPU backing protects the bassinet mattress from leaks, spit-up, and blowouts
  • Fits most standard bassinet mattresses including HALO, Chicco, and Mika Micky
  • 100% jersey cotton top layer is soft against baby's skin — not the plasticky feel of cheap waterproof covers
  • Machine washable and dryer safe — holds up through 50+ washes without leaking
  • Two-pack means you always have a clean sheet ready while laundry is running

Cons

  • The fitted elastic can stretch out over time on thicker mattresses
  • Not designed for the SNOO's proprietary mattress shape — SNOO owners need SNOO-specific sheets
  • Some parents find the waterproof layer makes a slight crinkling sound when baby moves
  • Patterns are limited — mostly neutral solids and simple prints
  • TPU backing will eventually degrade with repeated hot washing — use warm water to extend life

Material Quality & Fit

The top layer of these sheets is jersey cotton, which has a soft, slightly stretchy feel similar to a well-worn t-shirt. That stretch is important — it helps the fitted sheet grip the mattress securely without popping off the corners, which is a common problem with stiffer waterproof fabrics. After seven washes, the cotton is holding up well with no pilling or thinning, and the elastic around the edge hasn't loosened.

The TPU waterproof backing is the real engineering feat here. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a breathable waterproof membrane that's commonly used in cloth diapers and mattress protectors. Unlike old-school vinyl covers, it doesn't make noise when your baby moves, it doesn't trap heat, and it doesn't have that chemical plastic smell. We held one of the sheets up to our mouth and blew through it — air passes through, which means the sheet is genuinely breathable, not just a plastic barrier.

The fit is generous without being sloppy. We tested these on three different bassinet mattresses: the HALO BassiNest's proprietary oval mattress, the Chicco LullaGlide's rectangular pad, and a standard Graco bassinet mattress. They fit all three snugly, though the HALO's oval shape required a bit more tucking to get a smooth surface. The elastic band is wide and strong, and we never had a sheet come loose during the night, which is critical for safe sleep.

What we'd change: the color and pattern selection is limited to neutral solids and simple prints. If you want bright colors or fun patterns for your nursery aesthetic, you'll be disappointed. We went with the gray heather, which matched everything but didn't exactly spark joy. Also, the care instructions specify warm water washing, not hot — hot water will eventually degrade the TPU backing. That's fine for everyday washing, but after a true blowout, we wanted the sanitizing power of hot water and had to settle for warm with a long cycle.

Real-World Performance & Daily Routine

These sheets integrated into our daily routine immediately. We keep one on the bassinet at all times and one in the laundry rotation. On sheet-change days, which happen after any leak or every four days otherwise, the swap takes thirty seconds — pull off the old one, wipe down the mattress if needed, and stretch the new one on. Because the waterproof layer protects the mattress, we rarely need to do more than a quick wipe with a damp cloth.

The 2 AM blowout that originally sent us shopping for these sheets would have been a forty-minute ordeal without them: strip the baby, change the diaper, comfort the crying baby, strip the bassinet, scrub the mattress, find a clean sheet, remake the bassinet, try to get everyone back to sleep. With the waterproof sheet, it became a ten-minute process: change the baby, swap the sheet, done. The soiled sheet went into a wet bag for morning laundry, and the mattress underneath was pristine.

We also appreciate the sheets during daytime naps when our baby tends to spit up more. Before waterproof sheets, we'd discover a spit-up spot hours later, and it would have soaked through to the mattress pad. Now, the spot stays on the surface of the sheet, we notice it during the next check-in, and we swap it out. Our bassinet mattress still looks brand-new after a month of daily use.

Compared to disposable bassinet pads, which we also tried, these reusable sheets are more comfortable for baby and significantly cheaper over time. A box of thirty disposable pads costs about $15 and lasts us two weeks. These two sheets cost $21 and have already lasted a month with no end in sight. They're also more environmentally friendly, if that matters to you.

The one scenario where these don't work is the SNOO. The SNOO's proprietary mattress shape requires SNOO-specific sheets, and standard rectangular or oval sheets won't fit securely. If you own a SNOO, you'll need to buy the Happiest Baby branded waterproof sheets instead. For literally every other bassinet on the market, these are the accessory we recommend first — even before a sound machine or a swaddle.

Our Verdict

The essential bassinet accessory every parent needs. At $21 for two, these sheets pay for themselves the first time they save your mattress from a 3 AM blowout. Buy two sets (four sheets total) so you never run out. The only exception is SNOO owners, who need the proprietary SNOO sheets instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these sheets make a crinkling noise when the baby moves?
No. The TPU backing is thin and flexible, and the jersey cotton top layer masks any potential noise. Our baby is a light sleeper, and we never noticed any sound from the sheet during movement. They feel and sound like regular cotton sheets.
Will these fit my bassinet if it's not one of the major brands?
They fit most standard bassinet mattresses measuring approximately 32 x 16 inches, including HALO, Chicco, Graco, Mika Micky, and Delta Children. If your bassinet has an unusually small or large mattress, measure first. The elastic is stretchy enough to accommodate slight size variations, but very large or very small mattresses may not get a snug fit.
How many sets should I buy?
We recommend buying two sets (four sheets total). With four sheets in rotation, you can always have a clean one ready while others are in the wash. Newborns go through sheets faster than you'd expect — spit-up, diaper leaks, and drool mean you'll be changing sheets every 2–4 days.
Can I put these in the dryer?
Yes, the manufacturer says they're dryer-safe on low heat. We dry ours on medium-low, and they've held up through seven cycles with no shrinkage or delamination. Avoid high heat, as it can degrade the TPU waterproof layer over time.
Do I still need a mattress pad if I use these sheets?
Not necessarily. These sheets provide sufficient waterproof protection for most scenarios. However, if you want extra cushioning or your bassinet mattress is particularly thin, you can use a thin, breathable mattress pad underneath the sheet. Just make sure any pad you add is firm and fits snugly — loose bedding is a suffocation risk.
